CLASS DETAILS
Developed by choreographer Ohad Naharin, Gaga is an evolving movement language rooted in ongoing physical research. In Gaga, verbal prompts build throughout the class, directing attention toward sensation and awakening the imagination. Participants investigate different textures, degrees of effort, speed, form, groove and explosive action, expanding coordination, stamina, agility and their range of movement possibilities. There is no fixed choreography, and no previous dance experience is required. The class is open to people ages 16+. BODY In Gaga we move continuously. From the beginning until the end of the class, participants are taken on a journey through various bodily states, ways of moving, speeds, and intensities. While instructions are given verbally, valuable information can be gained by observing the teacher’s body and practicing imitation. All parts of the body are called into use, though each participant can work at their own level and adapt as needed. In the case of reduced mobility, Gaga welcomes the investigation of concepts explored even on the subtlest levels. MUSIC Music plays a vital role in shaping the experience, whether it’s subtly in the background or more prominently. Participants with hearing difficulties are encouraged to remember that groove is in the body and unique to each individual. ENVIRONMENT We aim to cultivate a space free from judgment, for this reason neither mirrors nor observers are permitted.
